Nick is a seasoned IP litigator with more than 35 years of experience, having served as lead or trial counsel in more than 250 cases involving patent, trade secret, trade dress and copyright issues in federal district courts throughout the U.S. and as lead counsel in interference proceedings and inter partes reviews before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, import matters pending before the International Trade Commission, and appeals before the Federal Circuit. He has litigated a vast array of technologies, including electrical circuits, computers and computer peripherals, wireless communications, software — including biometrics, antimalware, encryption, acoustic/vibration analysis and a wide range of medical applications — as well as mechanical and medical devices.
Nick also has decades of experience representing hundreds of U.S. and international startups and early-stage companies in developing and managing patent portfolios in a variety of technical fields, including medical device technologies, software and machine learning, wireless communications, computer, energy and telecommunications technologies. He has prosecuted more than 500 patents and has supervised drafting and prosecution of thousands more. Nick has extensive experience assisting start-up and early-stage companies with management of worldwide patent portfolios, licensing and strategic/litigation planning, as well as navigating intellectual property diligence associated with domestic and international venture capital funding and investment/acquisition by strategics.
With an educational and commercial background in mechanical and nuclear engineering, Nick has a common-sense, client-oriented approach to litigation and strategic portfolio management. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame along with an M.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned his J.D. from Notre Dame Law School.
