Jeffrey Lewis was quoted in a USA Today article discussing the shutdown of USAID and the potential impact on U.S.-flagged commercial carriers. “This is a critical arrow in our soft power quiver, where we promoted goodwill toward the U.S. by giving them this critically needed assistance,” said Jeffrey. “But it’s also playing a role in maintaining a U.S.-flagged fleet and the U.S. maritime jobs that go along with that.”
He also commented on the fear that America’s private shipping fleet could shrink due to the shutdown. “We don’t want to be reliant on Chinese-flagged ships or any other countries in the world,” Jeffrey said. “If we didn’t have our own ships to carry cargo, then we would have an Achilles' heel.”
